Spanish chlorine industry

A fundamental component of Spain’s industrial fabric

Chlorine is essential for most of the chemical industry and, therefore, for maintaining the standard of living of modern society. It is involved in the manufacture of 60% of basic chemicals, which are worth EUR 24.000 million to the Spanish economy each year. Chlorine is also used as a raw material in other major sectors and is an ingredient in making 90% of agricultural chemicals, 80% of pharmaceutical products and 40% of plastics.

The plants producing chlorine and its derivatives directly employ 3,500 people, while the number of jobs generated altogether by the chlorine-related economic activity of the Spanish chemical industry is 137,000.

The total capacity of the nine chlorine-producing plants currently operating in Spain is 828,000 tonnes a year. This represents 7% of the overall capacity of the countries of Europe, which is around 10 million tonnes a year.  Germany is the biggest chlorine producer with 35% of this total, followed by France with 15%, and Italy, United Kingdom and Belgium with approximately 8% each.
